In Loving Memory

  • Draco

Sweet Draco. You deserved a better life. We will miss you ever day. We are so grateful we got to know you even for a short amount of time. You taught us all so much. Draco stood up for the ladies and protected their food. He cleaned their wounds and helped them heal. He forgave humans even though they treated him terribly. The fungal infection in his lungs was too severe. We thought we nursed him back to health - Draco gained 20 pounds and stopped coughing and was thriving. Unfortunately the necropsy detailed that he was suffering from it for too long and there was nothing we could have done 💔 Through all of his ailments and pains he never stopped smiling and loving. He was a true light. We are completely devastated and heartbroken. Please consider howling with your friends or family to the moon tonight for our sweet boy. He was rescued from a horrific hoarder where he was living in his own feces and his eyes were so swollen from infection he could barely see (swipe). Find comfort in the fact that he got to be with his girlfriend Spirit in his last moments, and got to experience some joy and happiness. Rescue work is never easy and always hard on your heart. But it is worth it because even making one wolf dog’s life better makes all the difference for that one angel. Draco we love you and will forever miss you. We move forward in your spirit. #howlfordraco

  • Nickel

Nickel was a wolf-dog who was rescued from a horrible living situation. He was severely abused by his previous owner, and when we rescued him had an enormous infected laceration on his neck. Nickel was 10 years old when he passed, and had arthritis among many other medical conditions. Luckily, with lots of veterinary treatment he started doing much better and his wounds healed. Because he was beaten for most of his life, Nickel was reluctant to trust most humans. He could be very stand-offish and was fearful for so long, but finally bonded with our owner towards the end of his life. One day, his hind legs stopped working, and we found out he had cancer in his spine. Nickel was in extreme pain and started fading away. We knew he was ready to rest, so had to have him put to sleep. We miss him every single day. He has taught us so much about trust. Nickel had probably the most personality of any wolf dog we’d ever met!

  • Leika

Leika was brought to our radar by a friend rescue organization of ours called ‘Marley’s Mutts’. They told us that someone contacted them in Bakersfield about a wolf dog who needed a home because her owner was forced to get rid of all her animals. It turns out the owner was a hoarder, who had hundreds of animals in a small vicinity; suffering, starving, and neglected. Leika was probably the most emaciated rescue we've ever seen. She had rotten teeth, and was fearful of men. Now that she’s been with us a few months, she is eating more, got her bad teeth pulled, and has been paired with one of our puppies; ‘Bash’. Bash and Leika have completely bonded and in love! Although Leika has had to have two surgeries (one for a tumor and one for a blockage in her intestine) she is healing up and doing much better.

  • Zazu

Zazu was a baby Eastern yellow-billed hornbill who was confiscated from a pet store who was illegally selling him. He was a victim of the illegal wildlife trade. He was living in a tiny cage and never saw sunlight until we rescued him. He loved to fly, eat mealworms, and play in dust baths. Zazu is the same species of hornbill portrayed in the Lion King. Unfortunately, Zazu passed away 6 months after we rescued him from unknown causes. We did the best we could to care for him, and losing him left a hole in our hearts. We’re glad that Zazu got to experience some happiness with his human and animal friends for at least a short while.
